Wikipedia tells us that “orange takes its name from the orange fruit. On the spectrum of light, and in the traditional colour wheel used by painters, it is located between red & yellow…Before this word was introduced to the English-speaking world, the colour was referred to as ġeolurēad (yellow-red).” That last part I liked a lot. It would be nice to go around saying, “Hey that’s a nice ġeolurēad hoodie, you got there!” Will just leave it to the imagination where that conversation might lead one. At the very least, you can rhyme other words with it. So if English-speaking people had been like French-speaking people, we might be eating a ġeolurēad, instead of an orange. The Jello company would have fits over this. Imagine trying to do nice graphics with ġeolurēad, when you’ve gotten by with fewer letters for generations. But English does not abide by too many laws in terms of how it’s spelled or used.
Here is the fruit,ġeolurēad,on the kitchen chair @ my father’s house in Kansas. I head that the companies that control oranges dye them to look like something more between Red & Yellow than they are in their natural state. Is this true? Go ahead & comment!
Here is plaster of Paris, made to look like a freshly picked ġeolurēad. It hangs on the wall near the kitchen, where the real one posed (they have unique personalities) for the photograph.
This is an exterior wall of a closed Mexican restaurant in Galena, Kansas. The total orange saturation here would not work with the original English word. It’s a good thing that the Normans rescued us from our linguistic problems.

My little Fellow for Día de Muertos, ġeolurēad, rests, a quiet sentinel, in my bathroom.
In San Francisco, the escalator, ġeolurēad, will take you up, down–during the rare times it is not “Out of Order.” If you find one that works, please make a You Tube, so that we can remember what it was like.
Thought this was right up there with Kansas! It’s in San Francisco, as proudly orange as you can be-Great Tan, 329 Noe Street. Saw this from the window of my home for physical fitness (Old English=gym).
