Norway Day: Coda

Here are a few more photographic remembrances of Norway Day held at San Francisco’s Fort Mason this past weekend.

Fasten your seatbelts, please. I thought this was a toy aircraft, fashions from plastic. No, it's a specially wrapped & folded T-shirt, representing SAS Scandinavian Airlines!

Here is Rosemaling as it was originally intended, as architectural design.

4 May 2013: In San Francisco: Norway Day!

In addition to Cinco de Mayo, which had an early start soon after the workweek ended yesterday, there is also Norway Day, being recognised & celebrated the 4th & 5th of May 2013 @ Fort Mason Center, here in San Francisco. I got a lovely ‘gift’ commemorating this year’s event in the form of a hand painted bookmark, in a style called “ROSEMALING.”
WHAT IS ROSEMALING?
To quote verbatim from the California Rosemaling Association’s brochure, available @ various ROSEMALING booths, “Rose (flower) maling (painting) is the beautiful Norwegian folk painting, which dates from the 17th Century. This unique style of painting, with its graceful scrolls, leaves, and flowers, was influenced by Viking woodcarving of the 9th Century, as well as the Acanthus leaf & Baroque style borrowed from Greece & Rome. Rosemaling has been steadily gaining in popularity in the United States since the early 1950s.” For more information about this art process, please refer to their Website: http://www.califrosemaler.org

This lovely example of Rosemaling was done by artist Beth Twogood.

Alongside, Rosmaling, there were tourist information centres, various food vendors, and other examples of Norwegian art & culturally related displays.

Happy Norway Day!

At least for this weekend, Rome could relax, as all roads led to Oslo.

And in the event, you could not find your way to Oslo, there were other means of solace.
