About once in every other century, someone comes along who understands what really makes people tick. When we are lucky, we get someone who understands what makes people tock–and then the talking won’t stop! Such was the case 120 years ago, when Mae West was born in Brooklyn, New York. And who could have known what a day that was!
Mae West (1893-1980) in all her glory, unlike the French Revolution, she had her cake & ate it too, the men kept their heads, and all lived happily ever after.
She knew to wait till films had sound before she left the Broadway stage to introduce her persona to the movie-going public. The idea of Mae West without her voice, much as I personally like the Silent Era, would have been like rice pudding without raisins. She was smart enough to resist the temptation to go to Hollywood too early.
